The home owners searched tirelessly for a lot within a walkable community where they could build a compact home. While the site posed considerable challenges, EcoCraft Homes worked collaboratively with local architects Rothschild Doyno Collaborative to bring together energy efficiency with modern urban design to maximize performance and beauty in this three-story home, located in Sewickley, PA. The design solution responded to a steep slope hillside condition with limited access and considerable zoning setback requirements to ultimately maximize views and connections to the outdoors, all while being fully tailored to the unique needs of its owners.

The design creatively solved challenges faced by working with the wedge shape buildable area and identifying the opportunity to create a site entry sequence that harmoniously marries the house with its' setting. The home features an open floor plan with well positioned windows to optimize natural light throughout. Additionally, the dwelling boasts 10' ceilings, exposed floor joists, hardwood floor, an open staircase, workout studio, small brewery, and large entertainment/yoga room. As you move up through the home, there are three wrap-around decks. The sequence of spaces is completed with a breathtaking view to the Ohio River valley. The experience is uniquely enhanced with two operable garage doors that open the home to the outdoors.

The Pre-Fab home was set in one day as part of a three-month construction schedule. This method of building offered many sustainable design aspects including a reduction in construction material waste, improvements in an airtight exterior, reduced sizing in mechanical equipment, and improved air quality. Furthermore, the design was created to anticipate future growth and is set up to receive additional space over the garage area providing some flexibility in the use of the home despite restrictive site conditions.
